In true filming style we wrapped tonight on the dead of midnight eagerly anticipating the solid sleep we would have once we got home. Just as I did last night, I am going to give you a groovy run-down of how the filming went on and all the funny things that happened along the way.
Many of the crew arrived early to soak up the last rays of sun (or non-rain moments) before jumping into full flight about 5:30pm. After clearing the confusion of what was shooting first and starting the light rigging’s, Danny and I set up the dj area and played on the decks to set the tone. We got a chance early on to demo our brand new tune (“YOU WANT SOME” – Coming soon) with quite a bit of fanfare while a few of the dancers used it as a warm up song.
Danny and I were the first to be filmed with the many close up and unique angles while we performed on the decks with our masks, bling and promo t-shirts on. It was great fun rocking out like lunatics while getting told repeatedly to “play with the knobs” by floor manager Tristan!
After getting a solid amount of footage we moved onto the next scenes with the dancers surrounded by the extras for the party scene. We dedicated most of the shoot time for these scenes to allow the extras to get into party mode and dance around in the background while the dancers pushed through their choreography. Some of the highlights of this section was the “One More Time” (Daft Punk) sample that was played just before Tristan directed another take and playing up for the wide view time lapse camera.
A few more absolutely brilliant moments came when the dancers and extras replaced their recommended dancing for the Macarena and when cameraman Tim Lumsden had a ‘staged’ argument with Tristan leaving Tim to storm off set – which left an awkward silence and gripping fear across the floor for about 2 minutes! Luckily we got it all on film!
The extras did a great job learning some great dance moves on the spot and everyone seemed to have a fantastic time. After the break with some yummy sandwiches, lollies, chips and more Entourage (season 2-3) we headed back to film more closeup shots of the dancers and long shots of the djs rocking out. We then switched over to scenes of the dj’s getting given their masks and walking up the stairs before ending with the falling door shots.
Wrapping up the whole shoot just before midnight was a great feeling and put us all in good spirits for the final clean up. We finished with a few more promo shots/fun shots with the dancers and crew and each parted ways ready to face Monday. I am left with an extreme respect for all of the crew/talent involved in the production especially after working with most of them for over 3 months! We had a brilliant two days worth of filming with hardly any problems, glitches, arguments and injuries – and we were ahead of schedule for both days! It just goes to show that without the conflict of money and with the dedication from passion and respect, amazing things can be accomplished.
I will leave this post with the quote from the woman who started and built the foundation for the project, our choreographer Flic Manning, and her line from one of our first posts (The Beginning):
“In Melbourne, there are a lot of people who have amazing skills in dancing, film, photography and more all looking to get ‘seen’ in the industry by working on fantastic projects. I wanted to challenge the ideology that a one-off payment is better than the visibility of passion by using this music video as the vessel. When money is limited or not included, people get involved for the love and often let their imagination run stronger and in return it produces magical results.” – Flic Manning
Thank you to all involved for their amazing work and constant dedication. Our next few posts will be about the time lapse footage from both filming days and a few behind the scene clips while the music video goes through the editing and graphic process. We aim for the music video to be completed about late September so stay tuned!
